Castlemaine House 6
The site slopes steeply from west to east with a grove of young olives in the upper portion. In developing a concept for the site the olives have been saved and used as perimeter planting to the east and south boundaries. The house has been designed to step down the slope, the plan zoned into sleeping areas and living areas. This has allowed north facing orientation for bedrooms, living area, entry and outdoor room. The site has been stepped to create north facing outdoor zones on level with the bedrooms and living area. The lower outdoor space is carved out of the hill creating an intimate outlook to the living areas. The carport and workshop have been set into the hill and create a gateway into the lower court. Long views to the south are framed by openings to the dining area, bedroom 1 and the the outdoor room. The material palette includes recycled brick and Silver Top Ash hardwood shiplap cladding.
