Castlemaine House 8
This project is an extension to an extension. The original house on the site was a weatherboard house constructed in the early 20thcentury. The first round of extensions were completed in 2005 by Lifehouse Design. The first addition provides kitchen, dining, living and wet areas. The clients came to us seeking alterations to their house to create additional living space and upgrade the original house, which housed the bedrooms, so that they would be more comfortable over the winter / summer cycle. A number of design options were explored along with their cost implications. In the final analysis it was decided to dismantle and salvage as much as possible of the original weatherboard cottage and build a new extension to the first extension. Building new allowed the creation of thermally stable interior spaces as well as reconfiguring the bedrooms and inclusion of a second living space with in the footprint of the original cottage. The new design reworks the relationship of the house to the mature oak tree to the south and creates new views and connections to the garden and outdoor spaces from the bedrooms and second living area. A timber screen wall to the street side provides privacy to the bedrooms and re-purposed blinds from the original cottage screen the western elevation from summer sun.
